Jointed Bed Frame

Welcome to my jointed bed frame project.

I love the idea of being able to pack up and move wherever on a dime. Sometimes this is necessary when co-opping at different companies that may require me to go elswhere. One of the largest challenges I noticed when helping move friends in, was the inability to put the bed frame together . Usually this is what you would do first because everything revolves around  where your bed goes in a bedroom. I wanted a better, easier, and faster way to assemble a bed frame without having to deal with lost screws and lack of tools.

Original Design

The original design for the joints of this bedframe were made with the idea of  a tough, sound structure in mind. It consisted of two swirled joints wrapped on top of the corner pilar.

T Design

Because of material and tool restrictions, the original joints were too complicated to make, and too unreliable as the wood had to be cut thinly to fit. The second and final design kept the same method of fitting one joint into the other, however, this time they crossed eachohter to form a t.

Setbacks

Doing this on a college budget was difficult. If I had all the money in the world I would have made this out of the highest grade carbon fiber, but I don't have unlimited money so  I made it out of wood instead.

I chose the t joint because the quality of 2x4 wood is not great, however, this gave me the stability I needed while still essentially cutting out half the width of the plank.

Other than availibity of materials, the hardest challenge was the lack of tools. I made this bed frame with a hand saw and some chisles. Although I tried to be precise as possible with my measurements and cuts, I'm not perfect. This mistake costed me  stability, and gave the frame a squeaking sound.
